Every Friday afternoon, Samuel’s familiar figure, sometimes with a black umbrella over his arm, would be seen walking through Salubrious Passage in Swansea, a shortcut from the ‘unknown-to-most’ car park, to Wind Street, then the business centre of town. He carried a bundle of letters containing encouragement and gifts, ready to be posted to nationals and Christian workers around the world. Samuel prayed over every letter before posting it. Both the Central Post Office and Westminster Bank were on hand, as was a small shop where he used to buy a large packet of favourite sweets for his mother. He always enjoyed a visit to this Dickensian haven of liquorice allsorts and barley sugar, or sent his driver in while he attended to more serious affairs. It is interesting to note that those visits continued even after the death of his mother!

In reply to his correspondence, letters of appreciation for prayer and practical support poured in from all parts of the world as the ministry grew. Many were from former students who were remembered constantly. Extracts from letters tell their own story as he encouraged others with news he received.

From Maseru in Lesotho, one former student wrote:

‘Thank you very much for your wonderful and inspiring letter – your gift will help pay for a consignment of over five metric tons of paper for our Gospel Press. We shall print one million tracts to be dropped by aeroplane in April…. In our Conference at Maseru the power of God was mightily real among us. A totally blind man received his sight in front of all the people. In Pretoria, miracles happened by the score. I had never intended to pray for the sick – it was just the Spirit of God taking over. My prayer is that His Spirit shall be poured upon all flesh. Yours in His service, RWG Bonnke’ (Reinhard).

Reinhard had been a College student from 1959-1961.1

Another wrote:

‘The Spirit is moving in many places, despite the relentless attacks from the evil one. There is much blessing here in Indonesia at this time. Hundreds are turning to the Lord. This is remarkable when you consider that just a while back the Communists made a determined attack to engulf the whole of this area of South East Asia.’

Again, another student wrote:

‘South America is undoubtedly a fruitful field these days. Hardly a week passes without many entering into the experience of salvation. It has not always been like this, for we have laboured for many years (actually about thirty years with only one furlough) with very few results. God has wonderfully fulfilled Psalm 126:6 to us. Now our principal work is to guide these new believers that by the power of the Holy Spirit they may become victorious and that their zeal may be guided into the right and most useful channels for Him. It is important to place the Word of God in the hands of these young converts and really that has been the secret of blessing. They are eagerly reading the Word and they really love it.
